The Lancaster Telephone Company booth is seen during the Lancaster Home Show on April 24, 1959.

Purchasing a colored phone back then was a big deal and so was getting a second phone for the kitchen (See the marketing poster at bottom left).

The Home Show was an opportunity for locals to view the latest products from businesses like Friedman's Jewelers, BC Moore, and Belk.

LHS Pep Rally for State Championship Football Game - 1989- Lancaster SC Photos

Students, football players, faculty, news media, and family members gather at a pep rally in the former Lancaster High School gym in December of 1989.

Sitting on the floor is the 1989 football team led by Johnny Roscoe with the 1959 players behind them. It was the team's first trip to the state championship game since the 1959 team won the title under Wade Corn.

The '89 team played Northwestern at Williams-Brice Stadium in Columbia. The 1990 team made it back to the state championship in Columbia to battle Union High School.

Both teams attended the same school building as students. This building was located near where the current building is today on Woodland Drive.

Members of the 1959 team were quoted in stories saying it was the loudest and most energetic pep rally they had ever heard or seen. (Photo by Bobby Bell/ Bell Studio/The Lancaster Archive)

Preservation Tip - Writing on Prints

75 years from now, would you like your descendants to be able to know who is in a photograph, when it was made and where?

It's easy. Just write that information on the back of the print.

Remember, you may know who is in a photograph, but unless you write down the details, your great grandchildren won't know unless you give them the details.

Here's a quick tip when it comes to writing on the back of your prints.

Use a No. 2 pencil. Stay away from pens as they can smear and contain non-archival elements that can damage a print.

Another way to preserve family history is writing on a label that's with the photo, however, if you have a large collection this can take a lot of time compared to simply writing on the back of the print.

SPONSOR MESSAGE - Fran's Faithful Finds

Hi!

I am Fran Vincent, mother of a Beautifully Birthmarked Babe!

Our daughter discovered the Vascular Birthmark Foundation (VBF) in 2018.

The impact was immediate.

There were others in the world she could see and relate to. She could understand and be understood.  Then all of a sudden, she quit hiding her angel kiss.  Proudly, walking around the stares.  Confidently ready to talk about her port wine stain and birthmark journey!

That fire became a passion to share the VBF with everyone who needed to know!!!  Humbly and whole-heartedly she created a funnel for reaching mothers, teens and adults and spreading the news about this newfound portal full of resources, experts and footsteps for treatment!  The world wide web at work towards a positive and much needed cause!  I was amazed at other's stories and the thirst for the same discovery our daughter had also been seeking - for her entire life!

By now you may realize our birthmarked babe is Chelsea Vincent!  The little girl who walked tip toed, loved to play dress up and could sing and talk like an English child!  Energetic and consistently drawn to those in her life who were a little "different"; even the new kid in school. I could go on and on!

However, my purpose is to offer support to the VBF mission.  In my recent retirement, I combined my hobbies and interests into a small business named Fran's Faithful Finds.

One of my Favorite Finds is a company called Thirty-One!

I have been a Thirty-One Consultant for a little over two years.  It's a joy to share these wonderful products and gifts!  And, it affords an avenue to give back!  When needs for gifting, back to school, traveling, organizing and everything in between arise, please consider shopping with me.

On EVERY ORDER placed between June 19 - July 28, I will donate 20% (of the total spent before tax/shipping) to the Vascular Birthmarks Foundation! I am available to answer your questions, offer suggestions and relay product reviews. Our products have a 90 day warranty.

Main Street Looking North - 1956 - Lancaster SC Photos

The No. 1 song in the land was Elvis' "Heartbreak Hotel". Gas was 29 cents a gallon and portable, black-and-white TV sets had just hit the market.

This is one of those classic images we could look at for hours. Lancaster's Main St. is seen looking north in this amazing photograph captured by Lavoy Bauknight.

The former J.C. Penney at the intersection of Main and Arch streets can be seen at left. Playing at the Parr Theater is The Man Who Knew Too Much, starring Jimmy Stewart, directed and produced by Alfred Hitchcock.

Look closely to the left and you'll see a promo poster for Johnny Concho, starring Frank Sinatra. To the right side of Main is Lancaster Drug, Robinson Cloud and Collins & Dunn.

What else do you see in this picture?

A cropped version is below.
