Rooftop View - 1960 - Lancaster SC Photos

 

Parade goers step outside the window and on to the roof of the B.C. Moore and Sons department store to get a good view of the Lancaster Christmas parade in 1960. 

The store was located on Main St. at the Arch St. intersection. A closer look at bottom left shows a Cub Scouts troop walking in the parade.

Meeting Street Widening - 1954 - Lancaster SC

Meeting St. looking east, is seen being widened in Sept. of 1954. (Check out the cropped version below where the Gulf station on Main St. can be seen)

The economic boom of the 1950s following WW2 was some of the largest growth the world had ever seen. Towns all across the country were expanding roads, building schools and creating new neighborhoods in a response to the new economy. 

This classic photograph was created near the intersection of Meeting and French streets.

What do you see that's changed?

Clemson Football vs Georgia - 1974

 

The new football practice facilities, softball field and the upper decks on the football stadium aren't even built yet. This classic photograph shows 42,800 fans taking in the Georgia game in Death Valley on Oct. 5, 1974.

The Hub Grill - 1954 - Lancaster SC Photos

 

The Hub is seen in Oct. of 1954 after getting a facelift and an addition in the back of the building. 

Many teenagers flocked to this grill in the 1950s and 1960s for 35-cent cheeseburgers and 17-cent cokes.

It was located on U.S. 521 North in the Twin Pines area.

Mt Carmel AME Zion Campgrounds - 1950 - Lancaster SC Photos

The Mt. Carmel A.M.E. Zion campgrounds are seen on Sept. 10, 1950. The camp meetings, which take place each year in September, are a time of worship, fellowship and eating. 

The meetings began in 1866 and take place at Mt. Carmel Church near Heath Springs. It is part of the National Register of Historic Places .

North Main Street Widening - 1955 - Lancaster SC Photos

 

 

Wow! Things sure do look different today on North Main St. compared to this 1955 photograph. 

Here, a man looks over the city's road widening project as cars head south on Main. As a reference, today's First Presbyterian Church is located near the tall tower on the hill seen to the right of the white house. 

The area of large trees seen down the hill at right is the property where today's First A.R.P. Church is located. In 1955, roads were being widened all over the country in response to the economic boom following WW2.

Lancaster Motor Speedway - 1962 - Lancaster SC Photos

We're glad that No. 28 car is staying on the outside lane down the front stretch in this July 1962 image. Why? Because there were no rails in front of the fans at Lancaster Motor Speedway back then! 

Talk about getting close to the action! 

This is a great photograph to zoom into and check out all the details. If you look closely, you can see a car going into turn three in the background.
