A postman begins his walk up Main Street from the U.S. Post Office near the intersection of Main and Arch streets on Wednesday, Sept. 14, 1955. In this photograph, the postman is starting to cross Main St. Behind him is south Main going towards Columbia.

B.C. Moore and Sons - 1956 - Lancaster SC Photos
Weight scales that would also tell your future are see in front of B.C. Moore and Sons on March 16, 1956 at the corner of Main and Arch streets.
Downtown retail stores competed aggressively for customers by investing in their window fronts with the hopes that dramatic lighting and displays would lure buyers inside.

Lancaster Square Shopping - 1982 - Lancaster SC
Lancaster Square, located at 949 N. Main St, is seen the day after Thanksgiving on Friday, Nov. 26, 1982.
Mister Jack's Family Shoes, Ron's Shoe Repair, Eckerd Drugs, Roses department store and Shoe Show can all be seen in this photograph.
Most Lancaster natives agree that Williams Drug had one of the best cherry cokes around but Eckerd's cherry coke was a favorite as well.

J.C. Penney - 1960s - Lancaster SC
Shoppers browse at J.C. Penney department store in the 1960s.
Located at 300 S. Main St., "Penney's" was one of many retail shops downtown. The chain saw huge growth in the 1960s and 70s with over 2,000 locations across the country.
The store later moved to Lancaster Square. Today, this building is home to Tumble-N-Roll, a gymnastics and cheerleading center.

Barr Street High School Football - 1962 - Lancaster SC
Members of the Barr Street High School football team pose during practice on Oct. 4, 1962. The school was known for its athletic programs around the state for decades, producing athletes who later played professionally.
The team was led by coach Sandy Gilliam, who went 87-17 as a high school football coach and later coached at Maryland State.
Under center at quarterback is Jim "Butch" Duncan, who was a Super Bowl champion with the Baltimore Colts. He was the first South Carolinian to be a part of a winning Super Bowl team.
From top left, halfback David "Jet" Johnson, fullback Will Rogers, QB Duncan and right halfback Ben Blocker.
From bottom left, left end Bill Belk, _______, ______, ______right tackle Carl Montgomery, ______, _______
Belk, Blocker and Duncan were all drafted by the NFL in 1968.

Lancaster High School Football Field Construction - 1966 - Lancaster SC Photos
Lancaster High's football field can be seen under construction in this December 1966 photograph. At left is North Elementary, formerly, North Junior High.
If you look closely, you can see there is no LHS baseball field, Arby's or Lancaster Square.
At top right is the former Lancaster High School and track beside it.
