Market Street Pool Preparing for Opening - 1961 - Lancaster SC Photos

 

 

 Can you find the high-dive board? 

Thousands of amazing leaps, flips and cannonballs were made off this board. 

Here, city workers prepare the Market St. pool for opening in May of 1961. Many Lancaster children got their swimming lessons at this pool, which opened in 1953 at the intersection of Market St. and Chesterfield Ave.

Market Street Pool Opening Day - 1963 - Lancaster SC Photos

 

One swimmer launches off the small diving board, at left, while another takes the plunge off the high dive during opening day of Market St. Pool in the summer of 1963. 

The pool opened its doors in 1953 and welcomed swimmers for over 40 years.

Moon Rising over Charlie Duke Painting - 2016 - Lancaster SC Photos

 

 

The moon rises over Charlie Duke in this 2016 file photograph made in Lancaster, S.C. Duke walked on the moon 50 years ago today. 

The painting is part of the Wall of Fame mural in Lancaster, which celebrates some of the most famous people from the town.

Charlie Duke Painting on Wall of Fame Mural - 1985 - Lancaster SC Photos

 

 

Artists put the finishing touches on the Charlie Duke painting in October of 1985 on Dunlap St. across from the Lancaster County courthouse. 

The image is part of the Wall of Fame, which celebrates some of Lancaster's famous natives. Duke walked on the moon in April of 1972.

South Carolina State Museum - Apollo 16 & Beyond - Charlie Duke

Looking for a good day trip? 

Check out the new exhibit, Apollo 16 & Beyond, at the South Carolina State Museum in Columbia.

It features actual gear and suits worn by astronaut Charlie Duke, who was the youngest man to walk on the moon.

Above, Hunter Bell, 17, takes a look at Duke's actual  helmet worn during his moonwalk. Below is the key to the city of Lancaster, given to Duke in May of 1972. 

There's much more to be seen in this amazing exhibit. Visitors can also learn about South Carolinians who have had a direct impact in American space exploration history.

Sky City Department Store - 1981 - Lancaster SC

If you look closely, you can see the merry-go-round in front of Sky City in 1981. The popular department store was located on the by-pass and today, this building is home of Tractor Supply.

Its name was a tribute to the "Land of the Sky," a nickname for the city of Asheville, where its flagship store was located. 

 

Long before digital photography, many customers would drop off their rolls of film at the drive-up kiosk located outside the store. Their prints would arrive about a week later.
