Charlie Duke Back Home - 1970 - Lancaster SC













Lancaster Native Charlie Duke visits the drafting class at the vocational school at LHS in December of 1970. 

Duke was in town speaking to several schools that day and doing media interviews. 

He would walk on the moon 16 months later in April of 1972. 

Did you know? Duke recently teamed up with Buzz Aldrin and actor George Clooney as part of an Omega watch campaign? The Omega watch was the first watch to make it to the moon.

Barr Street High School Talent Show - 1970 - Lancaster SC

Lancaster High School - 1965 - Lancaster SC




















The former Lancaster High School (center right) is seen in this Jan. 1965 aerial photograph facing north. Rice School can be seen below the high school to the left.

The present day vocational school (location to left of track) has not been built yet.

At bottom of image are houses along Normandy Dr.

The LHS baseball field and North Elementary have not been constructed yet, as seen in top of photo.

Lancaster High School - 1965 - Lancaster SC


























The former Lancaster High School (now the Wylie St. Pool) is seen at the intersection of Wylie and York streets in January of 1965.

By this time, the newer Lancaster High School, which was demolished in 1993, was being used as the high school.

Calvary Baptist Church can be seen at left while Meeting St. can be seen above the football field.

Lancaster High School - 1960 - Lancaster SC






























The former Lancaster High School is seen in May of 1960. The building was located near the intersection of French and Catawba streets. The groundbreaking took place in the summer of 1955. The school opened in the fall of 1956. It cost just $427,000.00 to build the 57,000-square-ft. school. The structure was torn down in 1993 to make way for today's Lancaster High School.
