Charlie Duke Painting on Wall of Fame Mural - 1985 - Lancaster SC Photos

 

 
Artists put the finishing touches on the Charlie Duke painting in October of 1985 on Dunlap St. across from the Lancaster County courthouse. 

The image is part of the Wall of Fame, which celebrates some of Lancaster's famous natives. Duke walked on the moon in April of 1972.

Main Street - Looking South - 1972 - Lancaster SC Photos

 


 

Main Street is seen looking south in 1972. The Springs Block, the former Bank of Lancaster, Collins & Dunn and Macks Store are just a few of the places that can be seen in this classic photograph. 

This image was created from the top of the water tower that was located near the county courthouse.

The Dairy Mart - 1993 - Lancaster SC Photos

 

We'll take a hamburger, fries, Coke and a hot fudge sundae! The menu at The Dairy Mart is seen in the parking lot in 1993 at its 200 North Main St. location. The popular, walk-up ice cream shop was known for its shakes, dipped cones and sundaes. Main Street Looking South - 1953 - Lancaster SC Photos

 

Workers begin repair on the awning at J.C. Harris Furniture Co. on the 100 block of S. Main St. on July 20, 1953. 

At left is J.C. Edwards Groceries, Hardware and Coal. Heading down Main, looking south is Goodyear Tire, Robinson Cloud, Moore's, Parr Theater and more.

Rooftop View - 1960 - Lancaster SC Photos

 

Parade goers step outside the window and on to the roof of the B.C. Moore and Sons department store to get a good view of the Lancaster Christmas parade in 1960. 

The store was located on Main St. at the Arch St. intersection. A closer look at bottom left shows a Cub Scouts troop walking in the parade.

Lancaster Christmas Parade Cowboys - 1966 - Lancaster SC Photos

 

Cowboys ride down Main St., heading north, during the annual Christmas parade on Nov. 26, 1966. 

Western Auto, Belk and Friedman's Jewelers are just a few of the stores that can be seen in this classic image.

North Main Street Widening - 1955 - Lancaster SC Photos

 


 

Wow! Things sure do look different today on North Main St. compared to this 1955 photograph. 

Here, a man looks over the city's road widening project as cars head south on Main. As a reference, today's First Presbyterian Church is located near the tall tower on the hill seen to the right of the white house. 

The area of large trees seen down the hill at right is the property where today's First A.R.P. Church is located. In 1955, roads were being widened all over the country in response to the economic boom following WW2.

Cruising Main - 1982 - Lancaster SC Photos

 


 

Cruising Main St. was popular in Lancaster from the 1950s through the 1990s. 

Here, traffic is seen on the 100 and 200 blocks of Main St., looking south in 1982. 

Drivers would circle the blocks to see who was downtown and catch up with friends in the parking lots. 

Lancaster became well known for its weekend, downtown scene.Teens from Rock Hill, Chester, Monroe and other towns in the region would drive to Lancaster to cruise Main.

New Lights on Main Street - 1954 - Lancaster SC Photos

 


A lineman installs bulbs into the new, Main St. lights on Sept. 10, 1954 on The Springs Block near Macks Five and Dime store. The modern lights replaced the older bare bulb lights.

The Video Connection Arcade - 1983 - Lancaster SC Photos

 

The Video Connection is seen at 113 S. Main St. in May of 1983. 

The business, owned by David Lyles, was part of what some consider the "Golden Age" of video games. Space Invaders, Ms. Pac Man, Galaga and Donkey Kong were just a few of the games that kept children and teens entertained. 

Many birthday parties were held at The Video Connection.
